UNISON, the UK’s leading public sector trade union, today accused the government of breathtaking short-term thinking that could damage children’s education, after learning that the teaching assistants’ training fund has been scrapped. A letter from the Training Development Agency for schools (TDA) revealed the budget for training higher level teaching assistants (HLTA’s) has been cancelled for the 2010/11 school year.
UNISON and the TUC have produced a joint report called "Don’t forget the spending cuts!
The real impact of Budget 2010" by Tim Horton (Fabian Society) and Howard Reed (Landman Economics). The report shows that the Governments budget is very regressive hitting low income families the hardest. The Government claimed the budget was progressive because of how it dealt wit...h taxes and benefits, but what it did not take into account was how public spending cuts would negatively effect low paid families the worsed as they are more dependent on public services.
A BBC Survey of councils has shown that the biggest cuts will be in social care and transport. This confirms UNISON's fears that the ConDem'd Government intends to hit the most vulnerable hardest.
The BBC says that New schools and hospitals are very likely to be shelved, and many much needed social housing schemes are in doubt. Many of the councils contacted by the BBC had plans to save on services to teh elderly and disabled, child mental health and respite care.
The New Government has made it clear that it intends to attack the pulblic sector, this will have huge effects on all aspects of society. Please sign up to the "Million Voices" Campaign at http://www.unison.org.uk/million/
